Megan Amsler, Principal: North Atlantic Offshore Renewable Training & Development Center

Megan Amsler has been the Executive Director of Self-Reliance since 2001. She has been involved in the renewable energy industry since 1996 and has been developing renewable energy curriculum and workforce training programs for over 15 years. She is a wind energy expert, who has worked on the development of distributed renewable energy projects from educational outreach and planning stages to commissioning. Megan has been working on the development of a comprehensive offshore wind training program for the US since 2011. She established The North Atlantic Offshore Renewable Energy Training & Development Center with Ron Beck, to build a highly trained technical and safety-minded workforce to meet the needs of the emerging US and growing global offshore wind industry.


Ron Beck, Principal: Offshore Renewable Safety

Ron joined Tetra Tech as a Senior Offshore Energy Program Consultant in 2013 and helped create the company’s offshore safety program in support of marine survey activities.  Previously, as a member of the civilian staff in the First Coast Guard District, he was a principal contributor to navigational risk assessments for three offshore wind projects.  He was also a key contributor to a deepwater LNG port hazard identification work group.   He served as northeast regional offshore renewable energy program manager for the U.S. Coast Guard, regulating the nation’s first licensed offshore wind farm and the first hydrokinetic energy project.  He was the Coast Guard representative to the President’s National Ocean Council’s Northeast Regional Planning Body.  Ron is a subject matter expert in renewable energy permitting, navigational risk assessments, impacts on marine radar by wind farms, and he served as advisor to the First Coast Guard District Commander on regional energy issues.  He also contributed to the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board study on offshore wind farm worker safety.

He is an accomplished lecturer in the field of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and a skilled presenter in ocean planning forums.  Ron served as Engineer Officer aboard steam, diesel and gas turbine vessels and has extensive experience in the management of vessel construction and repair.  He was owner/operator of U.S. Flag cargo vessel in international service to the Bahamas.  Ron also served as a member of technical staff in the USCG Office of Boating Safety.

Ron is a member of the AWEA Offshore H&S Subcommittee and a member of NREL’s Wind Vision Task Force.  He is a USCG Licensed Master – 100 GT, and received his PE License in 1972.


Tanjia Maynard, Senior EHS Consultant: PMSS

 Tanjia joined PMSS America with extensive experience implementing, managing and coordinating comprehensive health and safety programs. Her responsibilities have included the development of national standards for offshore health and safety in conjunction with the American Wind Energy Association’s Offshore Health and Safety subcommittee.  Tanjia also has extensive project management experience in both construction and offshore wind. 

As a leading health and safety authority for US offshore wind, Tanjia provides valuable insight as to the implications of US safety regulations on the entire life cycle of a project including design risk analysis and crisis management systems. Tanjia has provided EHS and design risk analysis support to the Cape Wind project where PMSS in consortium with Keystone and Ramboll, are carrying out detailed foundation design. Additionally, Tanjia has completed EHS Compliance Design Manuals for turbine suppliers. Tanjia has also written an example safety management system for the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement that is intended to be used by the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management to aid developers in their lease block application submittal requirements. 

Tanjia is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and is the local chapter representative for the national Women in Safety Engineering committee.  In addition to serving on the AWEA Offshore H&S Subcommittee, Tanjia is also a member of the AWEA Steering Committee.


Joel Whitman, Principal: Whitman Consulting Group Inc.

Whitman Consulting Group has been involved in the marine power cable installation market since the inception of the European offshore energy market via its association with Global Marine Systems Ltd (GMSL). Global Marine installed cables at such projects as the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), NordE. ON1, BritNed, StatoilHydro Gjøa , Horns Rev, Kentish Flats, Beatrice, EstLink, Barrow Wind Farm, OWEZ, Horns Rev 2, Gwynt y Mor and Global Tech 1. Prior to the sale of its energy business in late 2012 the Global Marine Energy business had been developed into arguably the leading independent installer of marine power cables in the world. Joel Whitman, the founder of WCG was the former Strategic Director for Global Marine Systems Energy Ltd & CEO of Global Marine Energy Inc. Global Marine Systems Energy Ltd. was acquired by Prysmian Power Cables and Systems in late 2012.

Ocean Readiness is a partnership between four organizations with a background and expertise in offshore workforce issues created specifically to address the emerging offshore wind market in North America and the corresponding need for thorough workforce preparedness utilizing a combination of North American standards and procedures and recognized best practices from the decade old offshore wind industry in Europe.
